Developing the talent pipeline in the Detroit region presents challenges for employers seeking to make a significant impact. One effective approach businesses can take is encouraging employees to mentor students and recent graduates.

Mentorship offers students the opportunity to expand their professional networks, enhance skills such as communication and follow-through, and build confidence. This support is crucial for first-generation college students who may lack the social capital that often aids in securing initial job opportunities or internships.

CareerSpring provides a platform connecting advisors with students, particularly those who are first-generation or from low-income backgrounds, helping them transition into professional careers through advice and job connections.

Feedback from CareerSpring advisors highlights the positive outcomes of these mentorships. An advisor shared about a session with Joyce: “I enjoyed speaking with Joyce yesterday. I thought Joyce was prepared, eager, and asked great questions. I found her to be open to feedback and appropriately challenged the feedback I provided.” Another advisor praised Casey's enthusiasm: “Casey came with a great attitude and wonderful questions! She saw that I spoke French so we did the meeting in French. I encouraged her to leverage CareerSpring more too. Casey is doing amazing, and I am excited to chat again.” Other advisors echoed similar sentiments about their mentees’ engagement and openness.

Employers have an important role in shaping future talent by facilitating mentorship opportunities. For more information on CareerSpring's benefits for companies, interested parties can attend the Detroit Regional Chamber’s webinar titled "Mentorship to Drive Talent Development" on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m.
