DTE Energy hosts live discussions at Mackinac Policy Conference

During the 2025 Mackinac Policy Conference, a new initiative titled "Live From Mackinac Brought to You by DTE Energy" took place. The event featured live discussions with Michigan legislators and Cabinet members from both parties, focusing on political and economic issues. Sponsored by DTE Energy, the programming was hosted at the Grand Hotel's Parlor and emceed by Brad Williams of the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Richard Czuba of Glengariff Group opened the discussions by highlighting key topics from the upcoming 2026 election races with Samantha Shriber of Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS). Czuba stressed bipartisanship over partisan division: "[The Glengariff Group] did a poll for the Chamber that asked... 'Would you prefer a political leader who negotiates with the other side of the aisle...?' Czuba explained, '70 to 19 want compromise.'"

State Budget Director Jen Flood spoke about factors affecting Michigan's fiscal year budget, noting uncertainties due to "chaos in Washington, D.C." However, she emphasized that Michigan’s “economic tools are functioning well.”

Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and Sen. Kevin Hertel discussed Democratic budget proposals and cross-party cooperation. Brinks stated, “It’s incredibly important that we have a plan...” Hertel added insights from his experience in minority roles: “...you have to put those issues aside in order to do the work of the people.”

Rep. Jason Hoskins and Sen. Mark Huizenga addressed tax cuts and business improvements in Michigan. Hoskins questioned government efficiency: “So why would I want to pay more for services that may or may not be being provided well for us?” Huizenga advocated for infrastructure readiness: “Just a corn field is not ready for development..."

Sens. Kevin Hertel and Mike Webber highlighted advancements in Michigan’s defense industry following a bipartisan success securing an F-15EX fighter jet mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Rep. Joe Aragona detailed Republican strategies on regulatory reform which aim to reduce burdens like housing development taxes. He also spoke about cryptocurrency initiatives.

Senator Roger Victory addressed investment strategies within Senate Republicans' concerns, emphasizing road funding mechanisms.

DTE Energy’s Trevor Lauer joined Quentin L. Messer Jr., discussing economic development efforts including power usage requirements crucial for attracting large data centers.

Sens. John Damoose and Mallory McMorrow presented their joint ten-year economic strategy aimed at leveraging state advantages while involving residents.

Reps.Joe Tate and Curt VanderWall concluded with talks on maintaining Michigan's automotive industry strength amid changing tariff policies.
