Each year, The Detroit News honors a select group of citizens with the Michiganian of the Year award. This tradition, now in its 47th year, highlights individuals who have made significant contributions to the state. Among past recipients are notable figures from various fields, including artists and athletes.
The 2025 awards will be presented by the Detroit Regional Chamber on June 12 at their annual event. Sandy K. Baruah, President and CEO of the Chamber, was among those honored in 2024.
The recipients for this year include George Blaha, Dan Campbell, Geoffrey Drutchas, Tiff Massey, Eli Mayerfeld, Mike Murri, Rolf Peterson, Angelique Power, Brian R. Smith, and Ellen Thompson.
According to Nolan Finley of The Detroit News: "Michigan’s slogan... could just as accurately be the Great People State." He emphasizes that these individuals contribute significantly to making Michigan a desirable place to live through their dedication and creativity.
The selection process involves nominations from both readers and staff members of The Detroit News. The honorees represent a diverse mix of well-known figures and those working behind the scenes for the betterment of society.
