The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) has introduced the Small Business Self Re-Inspection Program to help business owners address minor fire code violations more efficiently. This initiative is aimed at eligible small businesses, providing them with resources to conduct self-re-inspections and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations without needing frequent follow-up visits from inspectors.

The program targets low-hazard small businesses under 2,000 square feet that do not require specialized inspection due to complex fire safety systems. Business owners can access a digital Self-Re-Inspection Checklist through their fire inspection report emailed via Tyler Tech (MobileEyes).

Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms stated, “The Detroit Fire Department is committed to working with our small business owners to create a safer city. By allowing eligible businesses to conduct their own re-inspections, we’re streamlining the process while ensuring fire safety remains a top priority.”

Fire Marshal Don Thomas described the program as transformative for small businesses in Detroit, saying it allows them to actively maintain fire safety and reduces the need for scheduling in-person follow-ups. “This self-re-inspection initiative is a game-changer for Detroit’s small businesses,” he said.

Fire Prevention Chief Dennis Hunter emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in fire safety: “This program gives business owners clear guidance on addressing potential hazards and keeping their establishments safe for employees and customers alike.”

Through this new system, business owners can check their compliance status, correct minor violations, and submit verification of corrections directly—helping them avoid unnecessary delays and costly re-inspections.
