Detroit is taking a proactive approach to support its young entrepreneurs through the new initiative, NextUp 313. Spearheaded by Council Member Waters, this program aims to provide structured access, education, and real-world exposure for aspiring business leaders aged 18-30 in the city.

NextUp 313 offers online training, micro-internships, and public conferences as pathways for young talent to gain insights and experience. The initiative focuses on retaining Detroit's talent within the community by offering sustainable opportunities that foster economic mobility.

"Programs like Grow Michigan focus on workforce development, business acceleration, and entrepreneurial success," emphasizing the importance of keeping local talent engaged with the city's economy. By doing so, these programs aim to create generational wealth and contribute to Detroit's long-term economic stability.

A key component of NextUp 313 is its online course designed for up to 140 participants across Detroit's council districts. These courses introduce fundamental design and business concepts essential for navigating the entrepreneurial landscape.

Access remains a significant barrier for Black entrepreneurs who often lack proximity to funding and mentorship. NextUp 313 seeks to close these gaps by integrating in-person events where participants receive feedback from mentors and engage in networking opportunities.

For revenue-generating businesses or startups, fourteen participants will have an opportunity to pitch their products or services at a June 2025 conference. This event places them before decision-makers who can offer resources for scaling their businesses.

The program also includes micro-internships within high-revenue small businesses or funded tech startups. Selected entrepreneurs will spend several days gaining first-hand experience in operations and strategy.

Career preparedness is emphasized with elements such as resume reviews and pitch competitions included in the program. This intentionality ensures that participants are equipped with tools necessary for competitive positioning in their industries.

NextUp 313 aims not just at introducing concepts but integrating young Detroiters into spaces where innovation occurs. "This program operates with the understanding that the city’s next generation of entrepreneurs...need doors opened."

By addressing systemic barriers faced by Black Detroiters, NextUp 313 focuses on providing real solutions leading to sustainable business growth and career progression within the city's Black community.

Inquiries about participation can be directed to mjackson@degc.org as this initiative works towards reinforcing Detroit's future as a hub for innovation and economic empowerment among young professionals.
