Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, representing Michigan's 12th district, has been vocal on social media regarding recent actions by the current administration. Her tweets address concerns about employment practices and freedom of speech in the United States.
On March 4, 2025, Tlaib expressed her disapproval of what she termed "illegal firings" at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She stated that these actions could exacerbate the housing crisis. In her tweet, she mentioned rallying with HUD workers, housing advocates, and colleagues outside the department to demand an end to these firings. "The illegal firings at HUD will make our housing crisis worse. I rallied with HUD workers, housing advocates, and my colleagues outside of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to demand that these firings stop."
On March 5, 2025, Tlaib commented on the firing of thousands of employees from the Veterans Affairs (VA) department. She warned that such actions threaten veterans' care and criticized the administration for not valuing commitments made to veterans. "Firing thousands of VA employees threatens the care our veterans rely on and sends a clear message that this Administration does not value the promise we made to our veterans. These illegal firings will cause a disruption in their care."
Later on March 5, Tlaib addressed statements made by President Trump regarding censorship and free speech in America. She highlighted contradictions between his claims of ending censorship and his threats against college students protesting against Israeli government policies. Tlaib suggested that President Trump should revisit the First Amendment. "President Trump claimed he ended 'all censorship' and restored free speech in America. He also threatened to expel, jail, and deport college students protesting the Israeli government’s genocide. He should reread the First Amendment."
