Michigan has launched its first "Infrastructure for Innovation" agreement between the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan National Guard (MING). This agreement aims to engage Michigan’s defense-focused innovation resources and make critical infrastructure available to entrepreneurs.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Michigan is home to a strong network of universities, local governments, and civic and military organizations that have the equipment and expertise entrepreneurs need to pursue their innovative idea, but too often it’s inaccessible.” She added that the state is committed to connecting innovators with cutting-edge tools and spaces necessary for product testing.
The Infrastructure for Innovation initiative was created by Executive Directive 2024-2, which instructs state agencies to catalogue technology, equipment, and facilities across Michigan. These resources will be made available to innovators who need them.
Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers highlighted the economic and strategic importance of Michigan's military assets. He stated, “Historically, the Michigan National Guard has prioritized establishment and development of partnerships with the military and defense entities within the region to enhance innovation-enabling capabilities.”
Ben Marchionna, Michigan’s Chief Innovation Ecosystem Officer, noted that this partnership underscores a shared commitment to breaking down barriers for innovators in Michigan.
Quick facts about Michigan’s defense industry include its contribution of $30 billion in economic activity, over 166,000 jobs, and nearly 4,000 businesses serving various defense sectors. The state also hosts significant military installations such as the National All-Domain Training Center in Grayling.
In April 2024, Michigan announced its new Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation (ODAI), led by Col. John Gutierrez (Ret.), aimed at further growing the state's defense and aerospace industry.
The MEDC continues to advocate for business development in Michigan. More information can be found on their website or social media platforms.
