Deloitte released the results of a new survey in June, revealing that workplace volunteer opportunities are important to employees and can enhance their work experience, foster connections with colleagues, and provide a greater sense of personal fulfillment and purpose.

The study, led by Deloitte’s Purpose and DEI Office, polled 1,000 U.S. office professionals. It found that the majority (95%) believe it is important for their employer to make a positive impact in their community. Additionally, 87% of respondents consider workplace volunteer opportunities as a factor in deciding whether to stay with their current employer or pursue a new one.

These findings highlight the significant role volunteerism plays in shaping an employee’s perception of and relationship with their employer. They offer key insights for organizations aiming to connect with and retain talent.

Additional findings include:

- 91% of survey respondents said volunteer opportunities positively impact their overall work experience and connection to their employer.

- Respondents who participated in employee volunteer programs did so to boost their sense of fulfillment and purpose (56%), strengthen community connections (55%), improve morale and teamwork (52%), and feel proud of working for their employer (49%).

- Nearly half (49%) indicated that workplace volunteer programs helped them build connections with colleagues.

- Nearly all respondents (95%) emphasized the importance of making a positive community impact. The preferred method was organizing in-person opportunities with community organizations (52%), indicating a desire for more direct engagement.

- Other meaningful ways employers can support volunteering include helping employees use professional skills within community organizations (45%) and providing paid time off for volunteering (42%).

Deloitte's survey also indicates that participation in workplace volunteer activities has a ripple effect. Nine out of ten respondents reported that engaging in these activities led them to participate in additional independent volunteering efforts within their communities.

"When companies encourage their employees to get involved in volunteer activities, everyone benefits," said an industry expert. "For employees, it’s a fantastic way to break out of the usual work routine and do something meaningful."

Employee volunteer programs benefit companies by building a positive image and attracting talent interested in socially responsible organizations. Communities also gain from these initiatives as businesses contribute resources and support local causes. Whether through park cleanups, food bank assistance, or student mentoring, these efforts make tangible differences.

In conclusion, employee volunteer programs create a positive cycle: happy employees, stronger communities, and companies distinguished for all the right reasons.
