In the Summer of 1862, a local judge, Henry A Morrow, raised a volunteer regiment in Wayne County in response to Lincoln's call for troops. This unit did not take the usual wartime bonus and volunteered to fight for the Union, forming the Michigan 24h infantry, which was folded into the Iron Brigade.
Some of those who answered that difficult call are buried in our local cemeteries, and three were buried at Wallaceville Cemetery (The Little Red Schoolhouse), seen below.
The flagpole there was damaged and has now been restored thanks to some generous donations from the American Legion Stitt Post 232, Dearborn Heights Rotary, Dave Zielinski, and Dearborn Heights Professional Firefighters Union Local 1355.
Also thanks to the Mayor's office and Building Maintenance for giving the site some needed attention.
On Tuesday, November 29th at 7:00pm at Caroline Kennedy Library there will be a presentation on the Michigan 24th and its impact in Dearborn Heights.
Hope to see you there.
