City of Garden City issued the following announcement on Jan 4.
NOTICE TO RESIDENTS SANITARY SEWER CLEANING
Throughout the winter months, the Department of Public Works will be conducting sanitary sewer cleaning. The section that will be cleaned this winter is Venoy to Merriman, Ford to Warren and Radcliff to Merriman, Ford to Cherry Hill.
Some sewer manholes are located in the rear yard easements. It will be necessary for the DPW crews to enter these properties for access to perform the work. If you are one of these property owners, we ask for your cooperation in granting our crews access to your rear yard.
The cleaning process causes a vacuum in the sewer. This will not affect most homes, but some homes may be affected that have inadequate or partially blocked drain vents. The vacuum may cause “P-traps” (the little S shaped bend in the pipe under the sinks and drains) to be sucked dry. Should you notice a sewer smell resulting from this, run a little water in your drains to refill the P-traps.
It is recommended to leave toilet seats down and cover floor drains. This will minimize any possible splashing of the water in the P-trap.
Any questions or concerns please call the Department of Public Works at 734-793-1800
