The Cass County Republican Party has censured State Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) for his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump.
The party said that Upton’s vote was against its interest and has disregarded the voice of Cass County voters.
"We believe Congressman Upton's vote is a betrayal of his oath of office and core values of the Cass County Republican Party," according to the Jan. 28 resolution approved by the Cass GOP's Executive Committee, The Detroit News reported.
Like the Allegan County GOP, who has also censured Upton, the Cass GOP's Executive Committee referred its resolution to another party panel to "investigate any further action that may be available."
In its Jan.19 statement, the Cass County leaders said that it pains them to see that their “own Congressman Fred Upton voted to impeach.” They said further that “Fred has been a leader for many years in the 6th District. He has done many good things for southwest Michigan. He is a friend to each of us. We will continue to work with our Congressman. Unity demands it. But for the reasons stated here today, we disagree with his vote.”
The rest of the 10 Republicans who have voted for Trump’s impeachment are also being censured by different Republican Party committees at the state and national level, including U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney and U.S. Rep Adam Kinzinger.
