On September 25, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative (D3C3) held its annual Fall Convening at St. Clair County Community College. The event brought together leaders, faculty, staff, funders, and partners from Southeast Michigan to review three years of progress and discuss future plans.

During the convening, colleges described how they are changing systems to better support students. These efforts include redesigning academic advising, expanding dual enrollment programs, and improving mental health services. The focus of these initiatives is to provide students with the resources and opportunities necessary for success.

A student panel, moderated by Pete Lacey, Chief Partnership Officer and Senior Vice President of St. Clair County Community College, was a key part of the event. Students spoke openly about their experiences in college, including the challenges they faced and the support that made a difference. Their stories emphasized the importance of including student perspectives in decision-making processes. "Their stories reminded everyone in the room why this work is urgent, and pushed institutions to stay intentional about placing student voices at the center of decision-making," according to event organizers.

The event concluded with a recognition of the stakeholders who have contributed to D3C3’s work so far and a renewed commitment to continue efforts to reduce equity gaps and increase postsecondary attainment in Southeast Michigan. "Together, this convening represents what is possible when colleges, communities, and students unite around a shared vision," organizers stated.
