Rashida Tlaib, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Michigan’s 12th district since 2019 and Detroit native, addressed several issues in a series of social media posts on September 23, 2025.
In her first post at 13:50 UTC, Tlaib marked the occasion of Congressional Black Caucus Week, referencing Detroit's historical connection to the caucus. She wrote, "Happy Congressional Black Caucus Week to all of our residents joining at the People's House! Detroit has always been at the heart of the Congressional Black Caucus, from Rep. Charles Diggs, the first CBC chair, to Rep. John Conyers, a founder of the CBC."
Later that day at 16:57 UTC, she discussed healthcare concerns and advocated for policy changes during an event focused on health equity. In her post she stated, "No one should have to ration insulin or choose between food and life-saving care. That’s why at the Choose Healthy Life Reception, I advocated for Medicare for All, stronger SNAP benefits, and real solutions to the Black maternal health crisis."
At 18:23 UTC on September 23rd, Tlaib commented on violence in Gaza and surrounding regions. She wrote, "On top of the horrific genocide in Gaza, the Israeli government continues to bomb civilians in multiple countries, including near-daily attacks on Lebanon. This week, one of those bombs killed a young family with ties to the Charara family in our district. Three beautiful"
Tlaib has served as U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 12th District since succeeding Brenda Jones in 2019 and previously held office in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976 and residing there currently, she is an alumna of Wayne State University and Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
