Senator Lana Theis Shares Reflections on 9/11 Ceremony and Raises Flag Protocol Concerns
Senator Lana Theis recently used her social media platform to comment on both a local remembrance event and flag protocol at state landmarks. On September 12, 2025, Theis shared her experience attending a memorial ceremony for the September 11 attacks, and two days later, she questioned Michigan's observance of a presidential order regarding flags at half-mast.
In her post dated September 12, Theis wrote: "Last night, I had the honor of attending the annual 9/11 ceremony at the Brighton Area Fire Authority. As always, it was a moving and heartfelt tribute to the lives lost on that tragic day and to the courage of the first responders who ran toward danger. A special thank you https://t.co/MfJ0mkVyo9".
On September 14, Senator Theis addressed Governor Gretchen Whitmer directly in two consecutive posts regarding flag etiquette following an order by former President Donald Trump. In one tweet she stated: "Pic taken today at just after 2pm. Hey, @GovWhitmer, aren't the flags supposed to be at half mast? That's YOUR place on Mackinac. Same with the Fort flag. @ShoesOnPlease The Trump order was through sunset on the 14th."
She reiterated her concern moments later with an additional image: "Pic taken today at just after 2pm. Hey, @GovWhitmer, aren't the flags supposed to be at half mast? That's YOUR place on Mackinac. Same with the Fort flag. @ShoesOnPlease The Trump order was through sunset on the 14th. https://t.co/Bg5zOA78e2"
The annual remembrance event attended by Senator Theis took place in Brighton Township—a community that holds ceremonies each year honoring victims of September 11 as well as recognizing emergency responders' sacrifices.
According to federal guidelines established by presidential proclamations—such as those occasionally issued by President Trump—flags are often ordered to fly at half-staff nationwide in observance of significant national tragedies or memorial events (source: https://www.va.gov/opa/publications/celebrate/halfstaff.pdf). State officials are responsible for ensuring compliance with these orders at public buildings under their jurisdiction.
Senator Lana Theis represents Michigan’s Senate District 22 and has previously engaged in public discourse about ceremonial protocols and civic observances across state facilities.
