Senator Michael Webber and Representative Mark Tisdel, both Republicans from Rochester Hills, issued a joint statement on Thursday addressing the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.
“We were shaken to the core to learn of Charlie Kirk’s violent death. Our prayers are with him, his family and all those saddened by this senseless act of violence.
“One of the greatest gifts we have as Americans is the ability to speak openly, share ideas and even disagree without fear. Charlie Kirk never shied away from asking thought-provoking questions and challenging people to think differently about the issues we face. That’s not something to be silenced. His work is something to be valued.
“In our work, we often sit across the table from colleagues who don’t always see eye to eye with us, whether it’s on the budget, legislation or local policies. Those conversations aren’t always easy, but they are essential. Honest debate and engagement are how we move forward as a community, a state and as a nation.
“We honor our country, not by shutting down those with whom we disagree, but by listening, learning and thoughtfully measuring our own convictions. Violence is the exact opposite of that process.
“As we face daily challenges like protecting our kids, supporting mental health, and teaching responsibility, we must remember that strong legislation only comes when people with different perspectives are willing to sit down, together and thoughtfully build better priorities.”
