Detroit City FC secured a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday night at Keyworth Stadium. The match was marked by goals from Ates Diouf and Darren Smith in the first half. Diouf scored in the 30th minute after receiving a pass from Kobe Hernandez-Foster following a turnover in midfield. Eight minutes later, Matt Sheldon assisted Smith for Detroit's second goal.
The starting lineup saw changes compared to last week’s draw against North Carolina FC, with Carlos Saldaña starting as goalkeeper and a new defensive lineup featuring Haruki Yamazaki, Michael Bryant, Devon Amoo-Mensah, and Matt Sheldon. The midfield included Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Ryan Williams, Alex Villanueva, and Jeciel Cedeño, while Darren Smith and Ates Diouf led the attack.
Early in the game, Detroit created several scoring chances. In the ninth minute, Hernandez-Foster narrowly missed with a shot over the crossbar. Later, Smith forced a save from Tampa Bay’s goalkeeper with a header off a free kick.
After halftime, Smith appeared to score again but his effort was ruled offside in the 51st minute. The match was interrupted midway through the second half by rain that caused a weather delay of more than 90 minutes. Once play resumed after 10 p.m., both teams adopted defensive tactics for the remainder of the game.
Detroit made substitutions late in the match: Abdoulaye Dion and Jordan Adebayo-Smith replaced Diouf and Smith in the 88th minute; Bilal Obeid came on for Hernandez-Foster during stoppage time.
With this victory, Detroit City moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña recorded his fourth clean sheet in six matches across all competitions.
Detroit City will continue its home stand next Saturday against San Antonio FC at Keyworth Stadium. Tickets are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
