Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has used her social media platform to address concerns about rising grocery prices and advocate for Social Security expansion.
On August 13, 2025, Tlaib posted: "Working families are stressed about rising grocery prices. While our neighbors struggle, corporate grocery chains are feeding customer data into algorithms to decide who can be charged more. I introduced the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act to put an end to this."
Later that day, she elaborated on the issue of price discrimination in a second post: "Imagine if your grocery store charged you a higher price for an item based on your personal data & determined that you were willing to pay more than the next person. I introduced the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act to prevent price fixing using surveillance technology."
On August 14, 2025, Tlaib marked the anniversary of a major federal program: "Today is Social Security's 90th anniversary, a lifeline for 69 million Americans. I’m fighting for the Social Security Expansion Act to make Social Security solvent for the next 75 years and expand benefits for seniors and people with disabilities by $2400 a year."
Tlaib has served as a member of Congress since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones and previously held office in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976, she continues to reside there. She earned her undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and holds a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
