Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on July 18, 2025, addressing humanitarian issues in Gaza, public health concerns over measles outbreaks, and the memory of Breonna Taylor.
In her first post on July 18 at 14:45 UTC, Tlaib wrote: "Starvation is being used as a weapon in Gaza. At least 66 children have starved to death. Israeli forces are blocking aid, shooting hungry Palestinians, and turning Gaza into a killing field, with full backing from the Trump Administration. This is a war crime."
Later that day at 18:49 UTC, she commented on rising measles cases in the United States: "We’re seeing the highest number of measles cases in over 30 years. This is what happens when officials politicize public health. Our children must get vaccinated to prevent measles cases."
At 19:42 UTC on the same day, Tlaib reflected on Breonna Taylor's legacy and criticized recent decisions related to her case: "Breonna Taylor should be with us today. She would have just turned 32. This decision is an insult to her memory and her loved ones. Her life mattered. Black lives matter. We must dismantle these systems of white supremacy that kill our neighbors and treat them as disposable."
Tlaib has served in Congress since replacing Brenda Jones in 2019 and previously represented Detroit in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976 and currently residing there, she holds degrees from Wayne State University (BA) and Thomas M. Cooley Law School (JD).
