The Michigan Senate has approved legislation proposed by Senator Joseph Bellino to commemorate two law enforcement officers from his district who lost their lives in the line of duty. The bills aim to honor Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Darrian Young and Hillsdale County Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr.
Deputy Darrian Young died following an accident involving her marked Animal Control Division vehicle and a drunk driver. Deputy William Butler Jr. was fatally shot at age 51 while assisting another officer during a traffic stop.
"Both officers were taken from their families and their communities far too soon," said Bellino, R-Monroe. "These bills pay tribute to two dedicated public servants who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities and will help the people of Monroe and Hillsdale counties honor their service."
Senate Bill 69 proposes naming a section of Highway M-50 in Monroe County as the “Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway.” Senate Bill 70 suggests designating part of Highway M-34 in Hillsdale County as the “Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr. Memorial Highway.”
If enacted, these bills would not impose any financial burden on state or local governments. According to state law, private contributions must fully cover the costs for installing and maintaining memorial highway markers.
