Business groups in Michigan are preparing to oppose two proposed measures that may appear on the 2026 ballot. These initiatives include a graduated income tax and a referendum concerning a new minimum wage law. Opponents argue these proposals could negatively impact employment and wages.
The Board of State Canvassers is set to review the 100-word summaries of the petitions, as well as their format. This step is typically undertaken by ballot committees before they begin gathering signatures.
Sandy K. Baruah, President and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, expressed concerns regarding the potential impact on small businesses: “This is a small business tax. And $500,000 or $1 million is a really small business. We need more of them in Michigan, not fewer of them.”
