Senator Joseph Bellino of Monroe, Michigan, expressed his opposition to recent legislative proposals concerning gun rights. In a statement released on Wednesday, Bellino criticized the Democrat-backed bills for potentially infringing on Second Amendment rights.
Bellino stated, "I’m not surprised by the constant attacks on our Second Amendment rights. If Democrats were serious about reducing gun violence, they would insist that soft-on-crime prosecutors enforce the gun laws already on the books."
He argued that instead of targeting criminals, these legislative measures complicate matters for law-abiding citizens who wish to exercise their rights responsibly. He added, "These bills are just more attempts at making it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to responsibly exercise their rights."
The senator also highlighted what he perceives as a double standard within the proposed legislation. He noted that lawmakers and governors have certain protections at the state Capitol that ordinary citizens do not receive under these bills. "While the governor and lawmakers are privileged to be protected by armed officers — and even to carry themselves — at the state Capitol, law-abiding citizens are not granted that same right under these bills," Bellino said.
He concluded by advocating for efforts focused on community safety without compromising constitutional rights: "We should instead be focusing our energy and resources on measures that actually make our local communities safer and don’t infringe upon people’s constitutional rights."
