The Ambassador Bridge, a crucial connection between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, stands as a symbol of the economic and cultural ties that link these two cities across the US-Canada border. This crossing is among the busiest in North America, facilitating approximately $400 million in freight movement daily. In addition to freight, over 3.9 million vehicles passed through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel last year, carrying commuters and visitors alike.
The impact of tariffs imposed by former President Trump is felt deeply in this region. General Motors workers are particularly affected due to their profit-sharing agreement with the company. Sandy Baruah, chief executive of the Detroit Regional Chamber, expressed concerns about this financial strain: “Are GM workers going to get a $14,000 profit-sharing check this upcoming year, based on the trajectory we’re going on?” he asked. “No.”
The effects of these tariffs reach beyond the automotive industry. Baruah highlighted that approximately 6,000 workers cross the border daily to work in Detroit's hospitals and doctors' offices.
