Senator Ruth Johnson of Michigan has reintroduced a bill aimed at establishing a prescription drug importation system in the state. The proposed legislation seeks to allow Michigan residents to access medications from Canada at reduced prices.

"This is about continuing the fight to help Michigan patients — who have struggled to afford lifesaving and quality-of-life medications for decades," stated Johnson, R-Holly. She highlighted the disparity in drug costs between the United States and Canada, noting that "it’s not fair or reasonable that our residents are forced to pay three times more for necessary prescriptions than people in Canada."

The initiative follows steps taken by former President Trump during his first term, which authorized state-level drug importation programs. Since 2019, seven states have enacted laws permitting such programs, with Florida's program already receiving approval from the FDA.

Johnson referenced a 2023 study indicating that patented drugs in the U.S. cost an average of 332% more than their Canadian counterparts. Senate Bill 317 aims to create a Canadian drug importation program specifically designed to lower prescription costs for Michigan consumers.

The bill mandates adherence to "track and trace" standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for domestic pharmaceuticals, ensuring the safety and authenticity of imported drugs.

"Once again, I am introducing legislation to fix this problem by allowing people in our state to save money by purchasing prescriptions originating in Canada at huge discounts — while still ensuring quality and safety," Johnson emphasized.
