The Detroit Red Wings concluded the 2024-25 regular season with a 4-3 overtime defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at the Scotiabank Arena. Detroit's captain, Dylan Larkin, reflected on the outcome, expressing disappointment: "We talked about it after the second period, there’s something to play for by getting to 40 wins. That would have been big for our team, but we just didn’t do that."

Detroit's goalie Cam Talbot made 16 saves during his 47th appearance this season, while Toronto goalie Joseph Woll stopped 31 shots, helping the Maple Leafs prepare for their upcoming playoff series against the Ottawa Senators.

Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan commented on the team's efforts, noting, "We had the potential to win a game, played a pretty good game. Our game-management skills were horrendous and it came back to bite us."

Auston Matthews of Toronto opened the scoring late in the first period, answered promptly by Detroit's Austin Watson to level the game. Detroit further advanced with goals from Justin Holl and Alex DeBrincat, yet the team couldn't hold the lead. Philippe Myers and Chris Tanev scored for Toronto, with Tanev’s goal forcing overtime. Scott Laughton netted the game-winner for the Maple Leafs, completing their comeback.

Acknowledging the game's frustrations, Alex DeBrincat said, "Whether it’s a meaningless game or not, it sucks to have a 3-1 lead and give it up then obviously lose in overtime. I think we did some good things tonight. I think there’s a lot of good things to reflect on the season."

Looking ahead, Larkin emphasized the need for offseason preparation to improve next year. He praised coach McLellan's expertise: "He knows what it takes to win in this League."

Coach McLellan and Marco Kasper spoke about the significance of upcoming team meetings and continuous improvement: "The meetings that we have with the players are real important," McLellan remarked. Kasper highlighted the need for better game management, stressing readiness for the complete game duration.

While reflecting on missed opportunities, DeBrincat noted the need to improve game-management skills. Injuries and inconsistencies characterized this season, and the team looks to address these challenges moving forward.
