Since joining the Detroit Red Wings in the 2023-24 season, Jeff Petry has been a veteran influence for the team and a dedicated contributor to the local community. Petry's community involvement has led to his nomination for the 2024-25 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which recognizes a player who demonstrates leadership and significant humanitarian contributions.
"Giving back, for me and my family, has always been important," Petry stated. "These last two years, it’s a little extra just being in my hometown and making sure that we’re taking care of the community that I grew up in."
The NHL announced 32 nominees, one from each club, for the prestigious award. The winner will be decided by a selection committee including Commissioner Gary Bettman and former award winners. Criteria considered will include the nominee's inspiration, involvement, and impact on their community. The winner will receive a $25,000 charity donation of their choosing and the possibility of a $20,000 grant for their team to support a special community-related activation.
Petry, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, is actively involved in initiatives like Leveling the Playing Field (LPF), which donates sporting equipment to under-resourced youth. "They take it back to a warehouse, where it’s separated and distributed out to different communities and organizations," Petry explained.
Beyond LPF, Petry is involved with the Detroit Red Wings Foundation in programs like Hometown Holiday Assist, Make-A-Wish Michigan, and Special Olympics. "It’s special to be able to do these things with my wife (Julie), who is a big part of setting up a lot of the things behind the scenes, and to have our kids along," Petry said.
