The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has announced the availability of approximately $16 million for the second cycle of the Going PRO Talent Fund. This initiative aims to assist Michigan employers in training, developing, and retaining employees in high-demand, high-skill positions. Employers have until May 2, 2025, to apply for these funds.

Since its establishment in 2014, the Going PRO Talent Fund has provided training for over 175,000 workers in Michigan, benefitting more than 7,100 businesses. The fund supports a range of employer-driven training programs, including classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and Registered Apprenticeships. Those completing the supported training see a 7.2% average increase in hourly wages.

Susan Corbin, director of LEO, stated, "The Going PRO Talent Fund is strengthening our economy and workforce by creating more opportunities for both workers and employers to make it here in Michigan. The fund is opening doors to higher-paying, more secure jobs for Michiganders while giving our businesses the talent they need to grow and compete."

Employers have the flexibility to tailor training programs to meet their specific business needs. These programs focus on industries and sectors to ensure workers possess the necessary skills. Eligible training should be short-term, address a specific talent need, and result in industry-recognized credentials.

"Michigan’s economy relies on a strong and skilled workforce, and the Going PRO Talent Fund is one of the most effective tools we have to support both workers and businesses," said Stephanie Beckhorn, deputy director of LEO’s Office of Employment and Training. "At LEO, we remain committed to investing in our workforce, removing barriers, and creating opportunities that strengthen Michigan’s economy."

The grants are distributed in collaboration with Michigan Works! agencies, encouraging employers to work with their local service centers to identify training needs and develop individualized plans for workforce gaps. Jody Kerbyson, CEO of GST Michigan Works!, emphasized, "Investing in employee training is investing in the future of the business. The Going PRO Talent Fund allows employers to upskill their workforce, enhance productivity, and drive long-term success.”

The Going PRO Talent Fund aligns with Michigan's Statewide Workforce Plan, aiming to expand career opportunities and strengthen the workforce. Recognizing its impact, Governor Whitmer allocated $54.8 million in the FY26 executive budget to continue these grants for workers in high-demand trades.

The initiative is part of LEO’s broader All-Access Michigan approach, which aims to remove barriers while providing opportunities. Michigan provides employment services to more participants than any other Midwestern state and ranks third nationally for adult employment assistance.

Applications close on May 2, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Businesses interested in applying should contact their local Michigan Works! Service Center. More information is available at Michigan.gov/MichiganWorks or Michigan.gov/TalentFund.
