The United Soccer League (USL) has announced a pivotal decision to adopt a promotion and relegation system following a vote by a supermajority of club owners. This move marks the USL as the first professional sports league in the United States to embrace this globally recognized model.
The new system will create an interconnected three-tiered men's professional soccer structure. Teams will have the opportunity to be promoted to higher divisions or face relegation to lower ones based on their seasonal performance. This aligns the USL with international leagues such as the English Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga, where promotion and relegation are standard practice.
Alec Papadakis, CEO of the United Soccer League, commented on this development: “A new chapter in American soccer begins. The decision by our owners to approve and move forward with this bold direction is a testament to their commitment to the long-term growth of soccer in the United States.” He further emphasized that this milestone reflects a shared vision among team ownership to build a league that fosters top-tier competition and community engagement.
Papadakis added, “Now, just as it is in the global game, more communities in America can aspire to compete at the highest level of soccer. It’s time.”
This historic change aims to enhance fan engagement and elevate competition within American soccer.
