The Detroit Red Wings faced a challenging match against the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre, ultimately falling short with a 2-1 loss. Despite outshooting their opponents 49-23, the Red Wings extended their losing streak to six games.
Lucas Raymond expressed mixed feelings about the game: “Obviously, it’s always good to play well, have a good team game and get as many shots on net as we had,” he said. However, he emphasized the importance of winning games at this point in the season. "Obviously stings right now, but we know what we’re capable of and what we can do in this locker room."
Head coach Todd McLellan acknowledged the effort from his team, stating that they played well but could not overcome Ottawa's goalie Linus Ullmark's performance. “They put a lot into that game,” McLellan commented. “We ran into a goalie that had a career night and unfortunately for us, we couldn’t find a way to beat him.”
The first period ended scoreless with both teams tied at nine shots each. The Senators took the lead in the second period with David Perron's power-play goal. Despite Detroit's 36 shots by the end of this period, they remained scoreless.
Alex DeBrincat felt positive about their performance: “I think we felt good,” he remarked about their play during the second period.
In the third period, Dylan Larkin tied the game for Detroit with his 27th goal of the season. His wrist shot from Raymond's pass brought him closer to tying Tomas Holmstrom on Detroit’s all-time list.
However, Dylan Cozens scored Ottawa’s winning goal on a power play later in the third period. Craig Smith made his debut for Detroit during this game after being acquired from Chicago Blackhawks.
Raymond remains optimistic: “I think if we keep playing like we did tonight, we’re going to be successful in a lot of games.” The Red Wings will next face Buffalo Sabres at Little Caesars Arena.
Postgame comments included McLellan discussing Raymond’s near game-tying goal: "Clearly, the puck went in a fraction of a second after the clock ran out." He also addressed missed opportunities on power plays: "There’s not much I wasn’t happy with as far as the game goes... It’s a fine line between scoring and not scoring."
Raymond highlighted that it is crucial to focus on results now: "We haven’t done a good enough job of that." DeBrincat noted how special teams made an impact: "Their power play scored two and we didn’t get any."
