The Detroit Tigers have signed right-handed pitcher José Urquidy to a one-year contract worth $1 million for the 2025 season, with an option for 2026 valued at $4 million. The 2026 club option includes performance bonuses based on games started as a pitcher.
In order to accommodate Urquidy on their roster, the Tigers placed Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 60-day injured list due to ongoing recovery from hip and elbow surgeries. Urquidy is also on the 60-day injured list as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. This adjustment leaves Detroit's roster with 39 players.
Urquidy, aged 29, has played in Major League Baseball for five seasons with the Houston Astros, achieving a record of 27 wins and 16 losses, along with one save and an ERA of 3.98 across his career. He has participated in postseason play every year since his debut, including three World Series appearances.
The pitcher began his MLB career in 2019 and had limited appearances during his initial seasons before breaking out in 2021 with an impressive record of eight wins and three losses. That same year, he became notable as the first Mexican-born pitcher to win multiple World Series games. In 2022, he set personal records by securing thirteen wins over twenty-nine appearances.
Urquidy faced challenges in subsequent years due to injuries. In 2023, he was restricted to sixteen games because of a shoulder injury and missed all of the following season after undergoing surgery for a forearm strain.
Born in Mazatlan, Mexico, Urquidy joined professional baseball when signed by the Astros as an undrafted free agent in 2015.
