The Detroit Red Wings are preparing for the 2025 NHL Stadium Series, where they will face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Ohio Stadium. The game is expected to draw over 90,000 fans. For the Red Wings equipment staff, led by equipment manager Paul Boyer and assistants John Remejes and Brady Munger, preparations began almost a year ago.

Boyer explained that planning starts with discussions with the League about game particulars such as jerseys and apparel orders. "It’s a lot of prep well in advance," Boyer said.

Munger noted that being the visiting team simplifies their responsibilities. "Really, you just need to worry about yourself," he said. Despite the special gear and fanfare, they aim to treat it like a normal road game.

To ensure readiness, assistants Dylan VanZant and Rick Szuber transported equipment from Little Caesars Arena to Ohio Stadium early Thursday morning. "That’s just to help us set up since we play [Thursday night] and so there’s not as much for us to do when we get there," Munger added.

Remejes highlighted subtle adjustments required for outdoor games, such as players wearing heavier clothing due to anticipated cold temperatures. However, they often revert to regular attire once on the ice due to warmth from exertion and heated benches.

Despite the extensive preparation involved, the excitement among the Red Wings' staff is palpable. Munger emphasized the significance of this particular game given its playoff implications against Columbus. "It’s been a while since a game like this has meant that much," he said.
