The Detroit Red Wings secured a 3-2 shootout victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place, extending their winning streak to four games. The team overcame a two-goal deficit in the first period to claim the win over the Western Conference champions.
"It was a big win," said Dylan Larkin, Detroit's captain, who scored his 22nd goal of the season during the second period. He acknowledged the difficulty of playing in Edmonton and noted that after being down by two goals early on, they managed to play a solid game from the second period onward.
Goalie Alex Lyon was instrumental in the victory, making a season-high 45 saves for Detroit. "I thought Alex was obviously key to the victory," said head coach Todd McLellan. He praised Lyon for handling numerous shots and providing crucial security for the team.
The Oilers took an early lead with Leon Draisaitl scoring his 36th goal of the season, followed by Jeff Skinner doubling their advantage. However, Detroit responded with goals from Michael Rasmussen and Larkin to tie the game.
In overtime, both teams failed to score despite Detroit having a power play opportunity. In the shootout, Lucas Raymond and Larkin scored for Detroit while Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were unable to score against Lyon.
Reflecting on his performance, Lyon stated: "That’s such a good, dangerous team. Just got to enjoy it for a little bit then move on."
Detroit will continue their road trip with a game against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night.
