The Detroit Tigers have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle to a one-year contract valued at $7,750,000 for the 2025 season. This marks Kahnle's 11th season in Major League Baseball.
Kahnle, aged 35, has been recognized as one of baseball’s most reliable bullpen pitchers over the past three years. During this period, he has maintained a 2.44 ERA over 96 innings pitched with a WHIP of 1.06 and a strikeout rate of 10.13 per nine innings. His performance places him in the top percentiles among his peers in several key pitching metrics.
Throughout his career, Kahnle has played for multiple teams including the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers. His overall career statistics include a record of 10-14 with eight saves and an ERA of 3.84 across 390 appearances. Notably, since 2017, he holds an impressive strikeout rate which ranks eighth among relievers who have faced at least 1,000 batters.
In postseason play, Kahnle has accumulated significant experience with a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 3.00 over 30 innings pitched in relief roles. He participated in the World Series with the Yankees in 2024.
During the last season, Kahnle achieved a record of no wins and two losses with one save and an ERA of 2.11 across 50 relief appearances. He was particularly effective against both left-handed and right-handed hitters and did not allow an earned run in most games during his final stretch from June to September.
Kahnle hails from Latham, New York and attended Lynn University in Florida before being drafted by the Yankees in the fifth round of the MLB Draft in 2010.
