The Detroit Red Wings announced a significant change in their coaching staff, naming Todd McLellan as the 29th head coach in franchise history. This marks the team's first in-season coaching shift in nearly forty years. Alongside McLellan, Trent Yawney joins as an assistant coach. The changes come with the departure of head coach Derek Lalonde and associate coach Bob Boughner.

Steve Yzerman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Red Wings, addressed the media about his decision to bring new voices to the team. "I can’t give you an exact date or time," Yzerman stated, explaining his thought process on improving team performance. Despite progress last season, Detroit's current standing at 13-17-4 has prompted this move.

Yzerman considered both internal and external options before deciding on McLellan for a long-term solution beyond just this season. "Ultimately, I believe Todd McLellan is an excellent coach and someone who I really want to work with," he said.

McLellan brings 16 seasons of NHL head-coaching experience to Detroit. His previous tenure includes stints with Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose Sharks. He returns to Detroit after having served as an assistant coach during their Stanley Cup win in 2008.

"Hockeytown, I know what that means," McLellan remarked after taking up his new role. He emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the team's spirit and performance alongside Yawney.

Yzerman stressed that while coaching changes are crucial, players also need to step up their game individually and collectively for better results on ice.

"With each of our players... You will your way into the lineup," he noted regarding player responsibilities under new leadership.

Derek Lalonde leaves with an 89-86-23 record over two-plus seasons since joining ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. Yzerman expressed hope that this restructuring would elevate player performance: "Time will tell if that happens."

As part of building towards becoming consistent Stanley Cup contenders again, patience remains key according to Yzerman: “It’s a difficult process.”
