The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has completed an audio and acoustics improvement project, aided by a $67,250 grant from the State of Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC). Over six months, the DIA replaced its sound system and installed new systems in the Great Hall and Rivera Court. Acoustic panels are still scheduled for installation to address challenges with sound quality.
This project supports the DIA's goal to "create an extraordinary experience for every DIA visitor, onsite, online, and in the community." The improvements enhance events like musical performances and lectures while improving accessibility for visitors using auditory devices.
"Investing in arts and culture enriches our communities and ensures all museum visitors access to inclusive and high-quality cultural experiences," said Elliott Broom, COO of the Detroit Institute of Arts. "The Detroit Institute of Arts plays a key role in our state’s artistic and educational landscape, and projects like this demonstrate its commitment to serving diverse audiences."
The MACC grant required matching funds provided by the DIA's general operating budget. Community support was crucial, with organizations such as DEAF C.A.N.! contributing insights to ensure accessibility enhancements meet all visitors' needs.
Project highlights include permanent speakers installation, scheduled modern acoustic panels in the Great Hall, a portable sound system in Rivera Court, wireless connections for hearing aids, reduced tripping hazards by minimizing cables, clear sound for diverse programming, environmentally friendly materials usage, and energy-efficient systems reflecting sustainability commitments.
Since 2016, through its Capital Improvement Program approved by the board, the DIA has improved accessibility with wheelchair-accessible seating and automatic doors. This project marks another milestone in these efforts.
