The Detroit Tigers have secured right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb on a one-year contract worth $15 million for the 2025 season. The agreement includes potential bonuses of $1 million each for reaching 140 and 150 innings pitched, potentially increasing the contract's value to $17 million.

Cobb, aged 37, is entering his 14th Major League Baseball season. Over his career, he has achieved a record of 79-76 with an ERA of 3.84 across 1,327.2 innings pitched, tallying 1,108 strikeouts and issuing 383 walks. His standout performances came in the full seasons of 2022 and 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, where he accumulated a combined fWAR of 5.5, ranking him among the top pitchers during that period. In those years, he maintained a 3.80 ERA over 301.1 innings with 282 strikeouts and earned selection to the National League All-Star team in 2023.

Cobb is noted for his ability to induce groundballs at a rate of 55.5%, placing him third among pitchers with over 1,300 innings since his debut in 2011. Only Dallas Keuchel and Marcus Stroman have higher groundball rates at 58.6% and 56.7%, respectively.

In the previous year, Cobb's season was shortened by injuries. He started with San Francisco before being traded to Cleveland, where he appeared in three games during the regular season with an ERA of 2.76 over 16.1 innings pitched. He also participated in two postseason games for Cleveland's Guardians but allowed five earned runs over just under six innings.

Cobb hails from Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Vero Beach High School in Florida before being drafted by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the MLB Draft in 2006.
