Businesses that have been part of Detroit's cultural landscape for at least three decades are now eligible to apply for the Detroit Legacy Business Project. This initiative is designed to support and preserve small businesses that have played a significant role in shaping the city's identity through their products, services, and customer service.

The program offers financial and technical assistance to these longstanding businesses, providing grants up to $50,000 along with training in marketing and promotional support. The project aims to ensure the continued success and community impact of these businesses.

Two types of grants are available through the Detroit Legacy Business Project: a $15,000 district-wide grant and a $50,000 citywide grant. These grants can be given as reimbursements or pre-payments for eligible projects. Each of Detroit’s seven council districts will receive two grants, along with two additional at-large grants citywide, totaling 16 grants.

Applications will be evaluated based on four criteria: Legacy Business Track Record (20 points), Social and Cultural Impact (40 points), Product and Service Retention (20 points), and Project Description and Grant Use (20 points). In each district, four finalists will be chosen for two grant awards based on their score, eligibility, and submitted documents. Additionally, a separate process will select four citywide finalists for two at-large grants. Final recipients will be determined following site visits.

Beyond applying for grants, legacy businesses can also join the Legacy Business registry to enhance their visibility.

Key dates include the opening of initial grant applications on November 21, 2024. Applications close on December 23, 2024 at 8 a.m., with finalists being selected by January 21, 2025. Awardees will be publicly announced on February 21, 2025.
