The Detroit Red Wings faced a challenging game against the New Jersey Devils on Friday, ultimately losing 5-4 at Little Caesars Arena. The match saw both teams exchanging leads before the Devils secured victory.
Cam Talbot, playing his 500th NHL game, made 24 saves for Detroit. Jacob Markstrom countered with 25 saves for New Jersey. "We had an opportunity to have a really good first period and come out with the lead, but we didn’t get it done," said Tyler Motte of the Red Wings.
Vladimir Tarasenko scored his third goal of the season early in the first period, assisted by Jeff Petry and J.T. Compher. Lucas Raymond then extended Detroit's lead to 2-0 with his seventh goal of the season. However, Dougie Hamilton scored for New Jersey on a power play, reducing their deficit to 2-1.
New Jersey equalized late in the first period when Timo Meier scored during a penalty kill for Detroit. Head coach Derek Lalonde commented on this turning point: "Unfortunately, it was a pretty big turning point."
Detroit regained the lead briefly in the second period through Motte's goal but soon found themselves trailing again after goals from Nico Hischier and Stefan Noesen put New Jersey ahead.
In the third period, Jack Hughes extended New Jersey's lead to 5-3. Justin Holl responded quickly for Detroit, making it 5-4, but despite pulling Talbot late in the game, they couldn't find an equalizer.
Raymond reflected on playing against skilled opponents: "If we do what we’re supposed to do, I think we can play against any team defensively."
The Red Wings will next face off against the Vancouver Canucks at home on Sunday afternoon.
