The Detroit Red Wings secured a 2-1 overtime victory against the Calgary Flames at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night. This win marks the beginning of a three-game homestand for the Red Wings, who aim to climb up the Atlantic Division standings.
Lucas Raymond scored the decisive goal during a power play at 3:35 into overtime. Reflecting on the team's performance, Raymond stated, "We’re getting back to our game that we’re supposed to play. Obviously goaltending has been a huge part of that." Goalie Cam Talbot made 24 saves for Detroit, bringing his career NHL games close to 500. Calgary's netminder Dan Vladar blocked 25 shots.
Head coach Derek Lalonde praised his team's structure and competitiveness, noting their reward from such efforts. The Red Wings took advantage of their first power-play opportunity when Alex DeBrincat scored with an assist from Michael Rasmussen, giving them an early lead.
Connor Zary leveled the score for Calgary in the third period with a power-play goal. Talbot commented on this moment by saying, "You can do one of two things. You can either fold and give the game back to them, or you can come out in overtime and get the game-winner."
Raymond's goal not only secured victory but also extended his point streak to five games and his goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games. Moritz Seider assisted in Raymond’s overtime goal.
Looking ahead, Detroit will face off against the New Jersey Devils on Friday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena as they seek their third consecutive win.
Lalonde emphasized Detroit's recent defensive success by stating, “The last four games, I think we’ve given up six goals.” Raymond expressed satisfaction with his overtime goal despite conceding late in regulation time. Talbot highlighted improvements in Detroit's defensive zone play as key to building confidence.
