The Detroit Lions have announced Brian Lewis of Howell High School as the week nine recipient of the 2024 High School Football Coach of the Week Program. The Highlanders, under Lewis's leadership, secured a victory against Belleville Tigers with a score of 30-29, clinching the Kensington Lakes Activities Association championship. This win marks Howell's first 9-0 season since 1963 and places them at No. 1 in Division 1.
Lewis is in his tenth year coaching high school football and his eighth as a head coach. He has been with Howell for five seasons, previously serving as head coach at Plymouth and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. The recent victory was his 50th win as a head coach out of 77 games. Lewis has led Howell to state playoffs three times in five seasons.
Detroit Lions Football Education interviewed Lewis about the victory over Belleville, the upcoming playoff game against Kalamazoo Central, and his involvement with VetLife and Lil Troops on the Field program. His reaction to being named Coach of the Week can be viewed on www.DetroitLions.com/coachoftheweek.
The High School Football Coach of the Week Program recognizes coaches who demonstrate success on and off the field while developing players' character, discipline, and skills. A panel selects winners based on these criteria each week during the regular season.
This year's program will distribute $12,000 to support high school football development in Michigan through contributions from the Detroit Lions and NFL Foundation. Each weekly winner receives a $1,000 donation for their school's football program. At season's end, one coach will be named Coach of the Year with an additional $3,000 donation awarded.
Now in its 28th year, this initiative has contributed $503,000 to Michigan high school football programs. For more information about this program contact Chris Fritzsching at chris.fritzsching@lions.nfl.net.
