Detroit City Football Club has announced a contract extension for midfielder Abdoulaye Diop. The new agreement secures Diop's place in the team for two more years, with an option for a third year in 2027. Since rejoining Detroit City FC in 2022, Diop has been instrumental in both midfield and attacking roles.
Diop initially joined DCFC in 2019 when the club was part of the National Premier Soccer League. He arrived before starting his studies at Eastern Florida State College and contributed to Detroit's success in winning the Great Lakes Division championship.
After spending two seasons with Atlanta United 2, where he played 26 games, Diop returned to Detroit City FC as they entered the USL Championship. Over three seasons, he has participated in 83 matches for the club.
In 2022, Diop played in 26 matches, starting 21 times and accumulating a total of 1,885 minutes on the field. The following year mirrored this performance with another set of 26 appearances and one additional start. On May 6th, 2023, he scored his first goal since returning to DCFC during a match against FC Tulsa that ended in a draw. He added another goal shortly after against Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The 2024 season saw Diop play a career-high of 30 games for Detroit City FC, starting all but one match and amassing a total of 2,447 minutes on the pitch. He scored twice during this period: once during the home opener against Loudoun United and again from a penalty kick while playing away against Orange County.
Throughout his tenure with Le Rouge, Diop has made significant contributions with four goals and two assists over his cumulative playing time of 6,258 minutes.
