The Detroit Red Wings managed to secure a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Monday night, completing a sweep of their season series. The Red Wings rallied twice from one-goal deficits, with goalie Alex Lyon making 28 saves in the process. This win marks their third consecutive game allowing two goals or less.
"The message to the guys after was just to keep working at rounding out our game and getting our game in order, because this group has shown some battle and some fight," said Derek Lalonde, head coach of the Red Wings.
The Islanders took an early lead when Anders Lee scored at 4:35 of the first period. However, Moritz Seider equalized for Detroit later in the period. Kyle Palmieri restored New York's lead in the second period before Dylan Larkin tied it again for Detroit with an impressive goal in the third period.
"It wasn't the prettiest one, but it counts," Albert Johansson said about his first career NHL point assisting Larkin's goal.
Lucas Raymond then put Detroit ahead with a deflected shot from Simon Edvinsson. The Islanders pulled their goalie for an extra attacker late in the game, but Lyon and his teammates held firm before Edvinsson sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
"Just got to give a lot of credit to the guys," Lyon stated. "Obviously we could have folded the tents there, and we fought until the bitter end."
Detroit will next face off against Calgary Flames on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena.
