The Detroit Red Wings have announced the recall of forward Austin Watson from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions. The 32-year-old player debuted for the Red Wings on October 14 against the New York Rangers, recording two penalty minutes and two hits in just under five minutes of ice time.
Watson has been active with the Griffins this season, contributing six assists and a plus-six rating in seven games. His career includes a full season with the Tampa Bay Lightning last year, where he scored four points and accumulated 93 penalty minutes over 33 games. Originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2010, Watson's NHL journey spans several teams including the Ottawa Senators and now the Red Wings.
Throughout his professional career, Watson has amassed 118 points across 516 regular-season games. He has also participated in postseason play, helping Nashville reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2017. His AHL experience is extensive as well, with stints at both Milwaukee Admirals and Grand Rapids Griffins.
Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Watson joins a group of Michigan-born players currently on Detroit’s roster. This includes forwards Andrew Copp, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin, Tyler Motte, and defenseman Jeff Petry.
Before turning professional, Watson spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), achieving championships with Windsor Spitfires and London Knights. He was recognized as OHL Playoff MVP in 2012 after securing a Memorial Cup title three years earlier.
Internationally, Watson represented Team USA at various tournaments including serving as an alternate captain during the 2022 IIHF World Championship.
