Detroit City FC secured a 2-0 victory over Monterey Bay FC in Seaside, California, on Sunday. The win marked the team's third consecutive triumph and moved them into third place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Ben Morris opened the scoring for Detroit City in the 37th minute with a goal from just over 25 yards out. Connor Rutz added a second goal in the 86th minute, sealing the victory for DCFC.
Head coach Danny Dichio made only one change to the starting lineup, with Nate Steinwascher returning as goalkeeper. Detroit struggled initially as Monterey Bay controlled possession during the first fifteen minutes. However, once Detroit broke Monterey's control, they began to find their rhythm.
In the 24th minute, Michael Bryant headed a corner kick into the keeper’s gloves. Abdoulaye Diop received a yellow card in the 30th minute for a foul in midfield.
A buildup play in midfield led to Morris receiving a cross from Rutz and scoring his eighth goal of the season. In the second half, Steinwascher made a crucial save in the 52nd minute to maintain Detroit's lead.
Morris nearly scored again in the 59th minute but missed narrowly. Both teams struggled to create chances as the game progressed. Diop was substituted due to injury in the 76th minute, replaced by Ryan Williams.
Rutz scored his second straight goal off a corner from Alex Villanueva in the 86th minute. Following this goal, Detroit made multiple substitutions: Jeciel Cedeño, Elvis Amoh, and Matt Sheldon replaced Rutz, Morris, and Maxi Rodriguez respectively.
Laurent Kissiedou entered for Rhys Williams during stoppage time as Detroit held on for another important three points. The win placed them two points above Tampa Bay Rowdies in third place; however, Tampa Bay has a game in hand.
Detroit City's recent form has been strong with only one loss since early August. They will next face Charleston Battery on Saturday before returning home on October 12th against Indy Eleven.
