Detroit ACE to host “How to Be a Mural Hunter” Online Meeting This Thursday

  • City encourages all artists with murals in Detroit to make sure their work is on the map!
DETROIT - Detroit ACE will host an informative online meeting 6PM Thursday, November 17 for experienced and amateur photographers to sign up to be mural hunters and contribute to the City’s growing mural map.

The Detroit Mural Map, powered by CANVS, allows residents and tourists to use their smartphones and devices to identify murals and artists wherever they find them.

The training session comes two weeks after Detroit ACE hosted a bus tour for the media, funders, supporters, and artists. Artists Waleed Johnson and Ijania Cortez offered commentary about their brilliant work at stops on the tour.

ACE is looking for more mural hunters to photograph murals at a time when murals are rising faster than ever before. The mural map launch debut follows USA Today ranking Detroit No. 4 in the nation in creation of beautiful murals.

The virtual mural hunter meeting will take place at 6PM Thursday, November 17 at detroitmi.gov/ace (or detroitartsandculture.com)

Detroit ACE contracted with CANVS, an art technology company, last June. Since then, CANVS has expanded to more than 100 cities with more than 2,000 murals identified and celebrated.  The Detroit ACE Mural Map will feature hundreds of murals and biographies of the artists so people can learn about the creators. The map also will have a search function that makes it easy to find favorite art and artists.   Rochelle Riley, the city’s Director of Arts and Culture, said the initiative is part of Mayor Mike Duggan’s “Blight to Beauty” campaign to clean up the city, promote public art, and demolish blighted structures.  Detroit ACE, she said, hopes to better connect residents and visitors with the talented artists who have created and will continue to create iconic murals.

Meeting Attendees Will:

  • Receive an introduction to the Mural Map Platform
  • Learn how to join the platform and submit photos of street art
  • Ask questions about the map and how to contribute photos
Detroit ACE oversees the city’s investment in its creative economy, supports the city’s creative workforce and uses arts and culture as catalysts for neighborhood growth and youth education.

CANVS is a digital arts start-up founded in 2016 as a passion project. The CANVS Street Art app has expanded to more than 100 cities, with more than 2,000 murals documented.
