Christal Phillips joins Detroit Board of Ethics

Christal Phillips, a civil rights and employee relations professional, is the new executive director of the City of Detroit Board of Ethics. She was appointed to the position this summer.

Phillips has extensive experience in civil rights, employment law, education and international relations. She was previously employed at the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission in Honolulu and the Detroit Public Schools Community District as an Assistant Director of Employee Relations. She also worked as a visiting professor at Yonsei University, with a focus on international development, and Pohang University of Science and Technology, both located in South Korea.

A proud native of Detroit and alumna of the Detroit Public Schools, Phillips received a full scholarship from the Skillman Foundation to attend University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods. Phillips received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School, a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

“The Detroit Board of Ethics is pleased to welcome a director with such outstanding credentials and experience after an extensive national search," said Kristin A. Lusn, Board of Ethics chair. "We are confident Ms. Phillips will lead our City to best practices in ethical standards.”
