The Office of Arts, Culture, and Entrepreneurship (Detroit ACE) is proud to partner with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) to host a free, family-friendly performance on April 30 at Greater Grace Temple.
The event will begin at 6PM with an hour of free musical activities for children through the Detroit Harmony Initiative, a community-driven initiative that aims to engage all children in Detroit with instruments and high-quality music education. The children's workshops will be followed by a 7PM orchestra concert featuring classical, spiritual, and popular music by African American composers and artists, including arrangements of hits by Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. Greater Grace Temple is located at 23500 W Seven Mile Rd, Detroit, MI 48219.
“The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is one of the best in the world,” said Rochelle Riley, the City’s Director of Arts and Culture. “This is an opportunity for residents who haven’t always felt the symphony is theirs to see that it absolutely is!”
The series of neighborhood concerts are the hallmark of The Detroit Strategy, which is the product of more than 100 listening sessions held with Detroit organizations and residents. The work is sponsored by grants from General Motors Corporation totaling $350,000 over two years. The DSO has presented Neighborhood Musical Experiences in Chandler Park and Southwest Detroit, engaging with more than 2,000 community members since March 2021.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation joined the effort in mid-2021 with a grant of $200,000 that will allow the Musical Experiences to expand into the Northwest Goldberg and Dexter-Linwood neighborhoods. Detroit ACE is a partner in promoting the neighborhood experiences and the Detroit Harmony initiative to provide instruments to children and to co-create programming for children.
To protect the health and well-being of attendees, musicians, and staff, all attendees must provide either proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 or the results of a Negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of the performance time, or results of a rapid test taken within six (6) hours before the performance time.
