County of Wayne issued the following announcement on July 30.
Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell today issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), chair of the U.S. House Oversight Committee:
"On behalf of the Wayne County Commission, I would like to express our profound sorrow on the passing of U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings. We have lost a champion who not only stood up for his constituents and this nation, but for democracy itself. Rep. Cummings stands among the best whoever served in Congress. He spoke out for those who lacked a voice and his words resonated."
Chair Bell also noted that Rep. Cummings' passing at this important time leaves a void that must be filled.
"His important work on the House Oversight Committee must be continued and we must rededicate ourselves to building the America he envisioned."
The name of Rep. Cummings was added to those memorialized during today's Wayne County Commission meeting.
