The vote is on Saturday, but Michigan GOP Chair Laura Cox has launched an attack on her opponent, Ron Weiser, just days before.
Cox is expected to lose by a wide margin in the election.
Cox sent GOP delegates an email filled with unsubstantiated accusations and innuendo on Thursday. She had previously withdrawn from the race a month ago.
Republican Party activists are questioning Cox's tactics.
“What a shameful thing to do," Sean Bertolino, the secretary of the Ingham County GOP, said. “If this was a big issue all these years, why didn’t Cox raise it sooner? This whole story stinks. I was always going to support Ron Weiser, but now I’m going to convince every other delegate I can talk with to do the same.”
Bertolino said he's known Weiser for a long time.
"He is a man of integrity who has supported Republican causes up and down the ballot in Michigan for years," Bertolino said. "Now is time to plan our defeat of the Democrats and their dangerous agenda."
Cox's email alleged that Weiser made a secret deal to pay a Secretary of State candidate, Stanley Grot, to exit the race.
That issue has already been reviewed by former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Young, as well as other legal experts and was found to not be in violation of anything.
