Detroit City Football Club will play against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in the USL Championship playoffs this Saturday, November 8. Detroit City FC advanced to this stage after defeating Louisville City FC, who were the top seed and Players Shield winners, with a score of 1-0. Devon Amoo-Mensah scored the only goal of the match following a corner kick from Ryan Williams, which was tipped by Jay Chapman before reaching Amoo-Mensah at the back post. Goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña made several important saves during the second half to secure a clean sheet and help Detroit move forward in the playoffs.

The win over Louisville was notable as it marked the largest upset in USL Championship Playoff history. Louisville had completed its first undefeated regular season at home and finished with nearly double Detroit’s points—73 compared to Detroit’s 37 over a 30-game schedule. The resulting 36-point gap between both teams was unprecedented in playoff history. It was also Detroit’s first victory at Lynn Family Stadium after losing all previous five matches there by an aggregate score of 14-2.

Pittsburgh reached the Eastern Conference semifinals after winning against Hartford Athletic via penalties last week. After both teams remained scoreless through regulation and extra time, Pittsburgh goalkeeper Eric Dick made a key save to start the shootout, while his teammates converted all four penalty kicks to secure their advancement.

Detroit City FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds have faced each other before in playoff competition. Two years ago, Detroit traveled to Highmark Stadium as underdogs against top-seeded Pittsburgh and won their first-ever USL Championship playoff game thanks to Dominic Gasso’s goal in the 78th minute.

During this season, both teams played three times and split results evenly with one win each and one draw. In their first meeting during the Jäegermeister Cup at Keyworth Stadium, Darren Smith scored late in stoppage time for a Detroit victory. At Highmark Stadium, Pittsburgh won with goals in each half. Their final encounter ended goalless at Keyworth.
