Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing environmental policy in Michigan, congratulating Detroit's new mayor-elect, and commenting on national food assistance litigation.
On November 4, 2025, Tlaib criticized state environmental practices by stating: "The State of Michigan continues to violate its own ozone protection rules and put corporate polluters first. Instead of protecting our most polluted neighborhoods, they're once again seeking to ignore high pollution days to avoid having to take action to lower ozone pollution."
A day later, she offered congratulations to Detroit's newly elected mayor: "Congratulations to Mayor-Elect @MsMarySheffield on your historic victory as the first woman elected mayor in Detroit's 324-year history. The most beautiful, Blackest city in the country always births movements. I look forward to working with you on transformative change to make" (November 5, 2025).
On November 7, Tlaib addressed former President Donald Trump’s legal efforts regarding food assistance programs: "Trump is appealing a court order because he’s hellbent on BLOCKING millions of hungry families from getting food assistance. It’s sick."
Tlaib has represented Michigan’s 12th district since replacing Brenda Jones in 2019 and previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976 and currently residing there, she earned her undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
